The style

What fine line actually means

Fine line tattooing uses a single needle, or a very tight grouping, to draw thin and consistent lines. There is no heavy black outline and very little shading. What you get is closer to a pencil drawing than a traditional tattoo.

It suits botanical work, script, small symbols and anything where the shape itself is the point. It is also the least forgiving style there is. A shaky line has nowhere to hide, which is why we work slowly and only book one guest at a time.

What we take on

Work that suits the style

i Florals and botanicals Wildflowers, single stems, birth month flowers, herbs and pressed-flower styles. We draw from reference you bring and adjust the composition so the stems follow the limb rather than fight it.
ii Script and lettering Names, dates, short phrases and handwriting copied from a note or a card. We set the size so the letters stay legible after they settle, which usually means slightly larger than people first ask for.
iii Small symbols and talismans Moons, stars, sun and celestial work, tiny animals, ocean and shell motifs, matching pieces for two people. Simple shapes that carry something specific for you.
iv Hand poked work Applied dot by dot with a single needle and no machine. The line is softer and slightly textured, the session is quieter, and many people find it more comfortable than a machine.
v Working around what is already there Pieces designed to sit alongside an existing tattoo, follow a scar, or fill the gap in a half-finished arm. Send photographs when you enquire and we will tell you honestly whether fine line is the right answer.

How it goes

From first message to healed

Nothing here is a surprise. You will know the design, the placement and the price before a needle comes out of its packet.

Start with a consultation

  1. Tell us what you have in mind

    Send your idea, rough size, and where on your body you want it. Reference images help, even if they are only close in feeling. We reply with whether it suits fine line, a time estimate and a quote.

  2. We draw it

    Your design is drawn for your body, not pulled from a sheet. You see it before the appointment and can ask for changes. Most pieces go through one or two rounds.

  3. Stencil and placement

    On the day we print the stencil and place it on your skin. Look in the mirror, move around, sit down. If it is a millimetre off, we lift it and do it again. This part is free and there is no limit.

  4. The tattoo

    Single use needles, a fresh setup, and breaks whenever you want one. Eat beforehand and bring water. You are welcome to bring headphones or one person with you.

  5. Healing

    We wrap it, walk you through aftercare out loud, and send it in writing too. Message us any time during healing.

Where fine line works, and where it struggles

Places it ages beautifully

  • Inner and outer forearm, upper arm, and the back of the shoulder.
  • Spine, ribs under the arm, and the back of the neck.
  • Thigh and calf, where skin is thicker and sees less friction.
  • Collarbone and sternum, as long as the piece is not too small.

Places we will talk you through first

  • Fingers, hands and wrists. Constant friction and washing breaks the line up faster than anywhere else.
  • Feet and ankles. Shoes, socks and Arizona sun are a difficult combination.
  • Anything under about an inch with a lot of internal detail. Lines that sit too close together blur into each other over time.

Living here, sunscreen is the single biggest thing you can do for a fine line tattoo. Cover it once it is healed, every time.

What it costs

Pricing, plainly

Every piece is quoted individually, because two tattoos the same size can take very different amounts of time. When you send your idea we reply with a firm number, not a range, so there is no surprise at the end of the appointment.

What the quote depends on:

  • How long the piece will take, including stencil placement and setup.
  • Placement, since some areas are slower and harder to work on.
  • How much drawing time the design needs before the day.
  • Whether it is one sitting or several.

A studio minimum applies to every tattoo, however small. A deposit is taken to hold your appointment, it comes off the final price, and it moves with you if you reschedule with at least 48 hours notice.

Common questions

Before you book

Most small pieces take between forty five minutes and two hours, including stencil placement. Larger botanical or script work is usually booked as a half day. You get a time estimate with your quote.

They soften more visibly than bold traditional work, because there is less ink in the skin. Placement matters more than anything else. Hands, fingers and feet fade fastest. We size and space the linework so the piece still reads clearly once it has settled.

Hand poked tattoos are applied dot by dot with a single needle and no machine, which gives a softer, slightly textured line. Machine fine line work gives a more continuous, uniform line. Both heal the same way. The choice is about the look you want, and we are happy to show you examples of each.

You must be 18 or older and bring valid government issued photo identification to your appointment. We cannot tattoo minors, with or without a parent present.

Yes. Bring drawings, screenshots, a photo of your grandmother's handwriting, whatever you have. If the design belongs to another artist we will ask you to get their blessing first, or we will draw something in the same spirit that is yours.
